Amazon announced Monday that it will invest up to $50 billion to expand artificial intelligence and supercomputing capabilities for U.S. government agencies, marking one of the company’s largest commitments to federal cloud and AI infrastructure to date. The investment will be deployed through Amazon Web Services (AWS) and will target the development of purpose-built AI and high-performance computing systems designed exclusively for government use.

- Amazon Web Services (AWS) will build and deploy the first-ever AI and high-performance computing (HPC) purpose-built infrastructure for the U.S. government.
- New investment will add nearly 1.3 gigawatts of compute capacity across AWS Top Secret, AWS Secret, and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions across all classification levels.
- Expands access to AWS’s trusted infrastructure and comprehensive AI services to help government agencies advance America’s AI leadership.
According to Amazon, the plan will establish the first dedicated AI and HPC infrastructure tailored to the needs of classified and unclassified federal operations. The initiative includes adding nearly 1.3 gigawatts of compute capacity across AWS’s most secure environments — AWS Top Secret, AWS Secret, and AWS GovCloud (US) — covering all levels of federal data classification.
“Our investment in purpose-built government AI and cloud infrastructure will fundamentally transform how federal agencies leverage supercomputing,” AWS Chief Executive Matt Garman said. He added that the expansion is intended to accelerate mission-critical work across agencies while reducing longstanding technological barriers.
The move follows a series of major U.S. investments by Amazon as the company deepens its involvement in national-security-grade cloud services and competes with other tech giants for government AI dominance.
