Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) signaled on Saturday that it hopes to restore calm and stability in relations with China after a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions triggered by remarks from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.
Speaking to reporters, the LDP’s policy chief said Japan remains committed to open communication despite Beijing’s strong reaction.
“We will continue dialogue and make efforts to build constructive and stable Japan–China relations,” he said, according to Kyodo News.
The latest dispute erupted after Prime Minister Takaichi made comments perceived by Beijing as supporting Taiwan — prompting an unusually forceful response from Chinese officials.
China’s Consul General in Osaka, Xue Jian, issued a threatening message toward Takaichi on social media, drawing a formal protest from Tokyo. Beijing demanded that the Prime Minister retract her statements and simultaneously warned Chinese citizens against traveling to Japan amid what it described as rising “security risks.”
China also issued a warning to Japan’s government: any form of Japanese military involvement in what it calls the “cross-Strait situation” — referring to China–Taiwan tensions — would be met with a “firm response.”
The flare-up underscores the fragility of Japan–China ties at a time when regional security concerns are intensifying. While Tokyo maintains that stability in the Taiwan Strait is vital for Japan’s national and economic security, Beijing continues to treat foreign commentary on Taiwan as interference in its internal affairs.
For now, Japanese officials appear focused on preventing further escalation through diplomacy — though the political fallout remains ongoing.
