China’s industrial production grew 4.9% year-on-year in October, the National Bureau of Statistics reported on Friday. While the expansion remains solid, it marks a noticeable slowdown compared with September, when growth was stronger by 1.6 percentage points.

Breakdown by ownership shows uneven performance across sectors:

State-owned enterprises led with a 6.7% increase in value added. Foreign-funded firms — including those from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan — posted a 4% rise. Private businesses, however, recorded a more modest 2.1% increase, reflecting ongoing pressure on the domestic business environment.

The official manufacturing PMI for October came in at 49, remaining below the 50-point threshold that separates expansion from contraction. The reading underscores ongoing weakness in factory sentiment as China continues to navigate soft global demand and domestic structural challenges.
